Napoleon Bonaparte defeated major European armies and built a dominant military empire, yet his most humiliating tactical defeat came at the hands of domestic rabbits. In July 1807, following the signing of the Treaties of Tilsit, Napoleon wanted to celebrate the peace accord with an elaborate rabbit hunt. He tasked his chief of staff, Alexandre Berthier, with organizing the event and securing the animals. Berthier purchased roughly three thousand rabbits, but rather than trapping wild hares, he foolishly bought domesticated barnyard rabbits from local farmers.
When beaters released the rabbits from their cages onto the field, the animals did not scatter in terror as wild game would. Instead, because farm-raised rabbits associated humans with feeding time, they mistook Napoleon and his entourage for caretakers delivering food. The horde of three thousand rabbits charged en masse toward the Emperor, swarming his legs, climbing his military coat, and overwhelming his guards. Officers attempted to whip the animals and beat them back with riding crops, but the relentless swarm forced Napoleon to retreat in disgrace into his carriage.
