So many bison were killed
It seems that millions of bison (somewhere around 10 and 30 million) roamed America in the early years of the 19th century. However, a century later, there were less than 1,000. Well, what happened? It seems that the American buffalo were murdered with cruelty, as most of them were shot dead by people who were commissioned by the United States Army.
As the American buffalo was an essential source of food and hide for Native Americans, Americans wanted to wipe them out, as of 1830. In fact, people were encouraged to kill the poor animal, explaining that every buffalo that’s dead means an Indian is gone. For instance, only “Buffalo” Bill Cody is guilty of killing 4,000 bison in only two years.
