When you think of the Old West, you might imagine that everyone in a saloon already had a six-shooter on their hip, but also an 1873 Winchester under their pillow. However, that’s not true, at least not in the majority of fledgling towns on the new frontier.

A lot of towns, such as Deadwood, Dodge City, Abilene, and Tombstone, had all kinds of laws prohibiting guns in town. In fact, you had to check your guns at the local sheriff, who would give you a token in exchange, which would be the same as a coat check, only that we’re talking about guns.
