4. Manchester’s “Sublime Christian Heroism” in supporting The Cotton Blockade received recognition from Abraham Lincoln

President Abraham Lincoln placed a cotton embargo on the South during the Civil War, which was carried out by a blockade of Confederate ports from 1861 to 1865. For European textile mills, the lack of US cotton shipments was disastrous. Of course, this started to get all the British workers angry, and despite the economic wreck, they still agreed to support this embargo in 1862.

A lot of them lost their jobs and were left without homes. Because of that, they turned to rioting. However, the next year, Lincoln wrote them a thank you letter for their amazing sacrifice. In Manchester, there’s still an imposing statue of Abraham Lincoln right in the middle of the city, to remind us all of the events that took place between 1861 and 1865.

What do you think about this? Do you see it as a mockery?
