2. After the Civil War was over, the Constitution was amended to free the slaves

During the civil war, Abraham Lincoln decided to free the slaves and wanted to assure equal protection for them. This was the beginning of a new era without slavery where everybody would have the legal right to vote.

He even allowed all the African American citizens to join the Union Army (known as the “United States Colored Troops”). Right before the Civil War was over, the southern states were allowed into the United States, but with some amendments.

The thirteenth was based on the abolition of slavery in the United States; the fourteenth was based on granting African Americans “equal protection under the law,” and the fifteenth was about giving everybody the right to vote.

  2. I’m surprised that there is no constitutional amendment providing for how any state can leave the United States or stating secession can’t be done.

  5. Our Congress people today need to read this and review our history. Especially about where we sll came from throughout the world, equal protection and the right fo vote. Certain ones come to mind more than others but all need a refresher.
