5. In the wake of the war of 1812, the US built a fort on the wrong side of the Canadian border
A lot of bad things happened during the so-called second American Revolution in 1812, and back then, the British forces launched strikes against Americans by crossing Lake Champlain, which is near the Canadian border and close to New York. Because two years before a serious battle took place there, President Madison wanted to build a fort that might prevent history from repeating itself again.
Since nothing went accordingly, in 1814, they discovered that the fort he ordered to be built was on the wrong side of the border, exactly under the Treaty of Paris, which is Canadian territory. For 20 years after this incident, the fort was abandoned. Did you know about this American history event?

They could have said what year the USA acquired Alaska.
Also, that Hawaii was annexed to the USA several years after the Hawaiian kingdom was overthrown by American citizens.
