5. Nannie Doss

A lot of investigators believe that most gruesome killers had to deal with a lot of trauma during childhood. This is also the case with Nannie Doss, who grew up in a family that was strict and controlling, and whose father was an abusive man. Because of this, she actually pursued the vision of having a good and happy life, but that doesn’t mean it happened the way she thought it would.

She had four children during her first marriage, which she entered into at the age of 16, but two of them passed away just a few months apart. The toddler, Florine, was left behind as her husband suspiciously went with one of the surviving daughters. When Florine grew up and had her own child, she made a brief visit to her father’s house, and when she arrived back, she discovered that the child had passed away while in Doss’ care. Doss’ second spouse became ill a few months later and passed away as well.

Doss purchased ten acres of property and constructed a home with the additional insurance money she now possessed. Does money bring happiness? Doss’s life of fake happiness was apparently cut short after the death of her fifth husband. After the autopsy, doctors discovered a huge dose of arsenic in his body that was enough to kill dozens of other people.

In the end, she finally confessed that she poisoned eight to eleven of her ex-husbands, children, and grandchildren in order to collect insurance money and have a decent life. She received a life sentence in prison.
