8. The Professional Flatulist: Entertaining the Royal Courts

When studying history facts, you quickly realize that low-brow humor transcends time. While medieval monarchs enjoyed the refined arts of poetry and lute playing, they also harbored a deep appreciation for slapstick physical comedy. This environment allowed one of the strangest specialized entertainers to thrive: the professional flatulist. These individuals possessed the astonishing physiological ability to control their intestinal gases, allowing them to fart on command, mimic musical notes, and perform rhythmic routines.

The most famous historical figure in this unique field is Roland the Farter, known in medieval records as Roland le Pettour. He served in the court of King Henry II of England in the twelfth century. Roland was not just a passing amusement; he was a highly respected vassal who held significant wealth. Historical records show that the King granted Roland a manor and 30 acres of land in Hemingstone, Suffolk. In exchange for this generous land grant, Roland had to perform a specific feudal obligation every Christmas Day during the royal pageant: “unum saltum et siffletum et unum bumbulum”—one jump, one whistle, and one fart performed simultaneously.

This bizarre entertainment career did not die in the Middle Ages. The tradition resurfaced spectacularly in nineteenth-century France with Joseph Pujol, known by his stage name Le Pétomane. Pujol discovered he could inhale air into his rectum and expel it with incredible force and pitch control. He became the highest-paid entertainer at the Moulin Rouge in Paris, out-earning legendary actresses of his era. He played the flute through a specialized tube, extinguished candles from yards away, and performed sound effects ranging from cannon fire to thunderstorms. The existence of the professional flatulist reminds you that humanity’s fundamental sense of humor remains largely unchanged across centuries.
