9. Margaret Wilson

Woodrow Wilson’s daughter assumed the role of presidential hostess after her mother’s death in 1914. The free-spirited young lady (she was 28 years old) held the position for a few months, but she reportedly didn’t like all the social demands, preferring instead to pursue soprano singing as a career.

Margaret gladly stepped aside when President Wilson became engaged for the second time in 1915, and took on her career choice. She even traveled to Europe to sing for Allied troops serving in WW1. She even promoted several social causes and worked in advertising, but she is perhaps best known for her affinity with Hinduism and Eastern philosophy.

Shortly before death, she moved to the Indian guru Sri Aurobindo’s ashram and passed away in 1944.
