6. Son’ka the Golden Hand

The story of Sofia Ivanovna Blyuvshtein, also known as Son’ka the Golden Hand, is one that is very interesting, and you’ll know why in just a couple of minutes. She was a very pretty woman who worked in the 19th century in the Russian Empire and was actually appreciated by the population.

She was accused of committing plenty of robberies, and after some time, she was caught by the authorities and banished to the Sakhalin penal colony. There are a few movies and books about her, and all of them portray her as the female equivalent of Robin Hood, as she only stole from the rich.

For instance, she once talked to a banker, Mr. Dogmarov, and she politely asked him to change a thousand rubles’ worth of bills for her. The conversation was very nice, and the man was thrilled to discover that Mrs. Sofia San Donato, as she introduced herself, was traveling to Moscow with the same train he was about to embark on.

He asked Sofia if she would allow him to accompany her, and they spent all night talking, laughing, and eating chocolate. When the man woke up from his deep sleep, he noticed that he was missing approximately 43,000 rubles.
