2. Queen Victoria donated a book, and soon after this, the Chicago Public Library began its activity
Throughout American history, a lot of things have happened, including various disasters, and one of them is the Great Chicago Fire. This event took place in 1871 and destroyed most of the Midwestern city, killing more than 300 people. Among all these losses, a lot of books and important documents were burned, and this happened to be among the worst destructions of books since the burning of the Alexandrian Library.
Help came from all around the world, especially from the United Kingdom, and the first book was donated by Queen Victoria, and that was probably the most fruitful beginning for the public library in Chicago because shortly after that, they received almost 8,000 books.
