6. Hedy Lamarr

…Hedy Lamarr is the woman who proved to everyone that a smart girl can be attractive!

She was a charming and popular film star in the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s and was very much appreciated for her scientific contributions to the world. The stunning brunette was born in Austria and began her career by acting in a few films in Germany.

The president of MGM Studios, Louis B. Mayer, happened to cross her path while she was living in Paris. He was so impressed by her bewitching beauty and talent that he reportedly made her an offer for a Hollywood movie contract.

At the beginning of World War II, she worked with composer George Antheil to find some new technological equipment and help those in need. Their device was used to spread frequency hopping and spectrum technologies so that the Axis forces wouldn’t be able to jam them.

At first, the US Navy didn’t seem to be interested in what they had developed, but a few years later, in the 1960s, they took it and used it in their weapon systems.

In terms of modern technology, the creation by Hedy Lamarr and George Antheil served as the foundation for Bluetooth, CDMA, and Wi-Fi. Even though initially their invention wasn’t considered such a big deal, it led them into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2014.
