8. Russian imperial stout beer wasn’t…Russian at all

Along the years, a lot of historians have discovered interesting but also weird things about the entire globe. And among one of the weirdest facts is a little story about the traditional beer style called stout.

Despite its name, this beer doesn’t come from Russia; in fact, it was made for the first time in England, and it’s similar to the usual English porter, but it contains a bigger amount of alcohol per bottle. Because Russia and the Baltic countries demand a huge quantity of porter, English brewers added more alcohol for better preservation until the beer arrived at its destination.

Voila! This is how a regular porter became the one called “Russian Imperial Stout!”

  1. At the beginning of World War I, observation balloons were so important that enemy forces tried to shoot them down. An Italian biplane pilot was harassing and shooting his revolver at an unarmed balloon observer when the man grew frustrated and threw his map case at the pilot. It hit and briefly stunned the pilot, who lost control of his plane and crashed. The incident remains the only time a balloon defeated an airplane in combat.
