6. Ketchup was initially sold as medicine

Did you know that ketchup was initially sold as medicine because it was supposed to cure stomach problems? Before becoming famous for being one of the most popular spices, ketchup apparently soothed an upset stomach due to its vinegar content.

American doctor Dr. John Cook Bennett is credited with coming up with the concept first. He is supposed to have later sold the formula as “tomato pills.” Tomatoes’ magical ingredients like lycopene, pectin, and other minerals can also cure other common conditions like jaundice, rheumatism, diarrhea, and indigestion.

7. During the Great Depression people made their own clothes

This is more than just a simple weird fact because, during the Great Depression, everybody was so desperate to survive and, because the economy was beyond horrific, they had to sacrifice a lot of things that before were considered normal habits. One of them is that nobody buys clothes anymore.

They started a new “trend,” which was to make clothes out of food sacks. Those sacks in which you usually keep potatoes, onions, or even flour were used to make people’s day-to-day clothes. As a result, food wholesalers began to make their bags more colorful to aid in people’s continued interest in fashion. Hard times!

  1. At the beginning of World War I, observation balloons were so important that enemy forces tried to shoot them down. An Italian biplane pilot was harassing and shooting his revolver at an unarmed balloon observer when the man grew frustrated and threw his map case at the pilot. It hit and briefly stunned the pilot, who lost control of his plane and crashed. The incident remains the only time a balloon defeated an airplane in combat.
