Zachary Taylor

Zachary Taylor took the idea of serving side-by-side with his soldiers as a true honor, earning his nickname “Old Rough and Ready”. He became Major General in the U.S. Army and was remembered as a hero in the Mexican-American war, as he managed to win battles, even if he fought with forces that were outnumbering his army.

Taylor’s great military tactics and commanding skills were shown during the 1846 Battle of Monterrey, which was a fortified Mexican stronghold, so much so that it was seen as “undefeatable”. Even if Taylor’s army was outnumbered by more than 1,000 soldiers, he managed to take the stronghold in only three days.

After capturing the Mexican town of Buena Vista back in 1847, Taylor had to send his men to Veracruz, to help General Winfield Scoot. He followed the order but decided to leave troops to defend Buena Vista, too.

When the Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna heard this, he immediately decided to attack Buena Vista with over 20,000 men. Even if Santa Anna demanded Taylor’s forces to surrender, he refused, managing to beat the Mexican General’s army with only 6,000 men.

  1. There were a few more. Rutherford Hayes, James Garfield, William Henry Harrison, James Monroe, Franklin Pierce, and George Bush. (Who was not shot down during the battle of Midway, but later on in the war flying over one of the islands in the Iwo Jima chain).

  2. This is not Theodore Roosevelt, this is Franklin D. Roosevelt, who was President from 1933 until hill his death in April 1945.
I have posted this comment 2 or 3 times already, but it doesn’t seem to show up.

  3. This is not Theodore Roosevelt. This is his distant cousin, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, FDR, our longest serving president. , elected in 1932. 1936,1940 and 1944. He died in office in April of 1945, did not live to see the end of WW!!. Historians usually agree he was one of our three greatest, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and FDR. I was born in 1931, he was the only President I knew for many years.
