Aileen Wuornos
Aileen Wuornos is probably one of the most famous American serial killers on our list, and this is also due to the fact that she made seven victims in just one year despite the way in which she operated being quite chaotic. She used to sell her body on the Floridian highways, and then she would shoot her male clients and rob them, making her victims all between 1989 and 1990.
When she was caught, she claimed that all the men she killed assaulted her and that she just responded in self-defense. However, her story never added up because she both claimed self-defense and also claimed that she did it just to get the men’s money. She was sentenced to death for six of the seven murders, and she spent ten years on death row before she had the lethal injection in 2002.
As opposed to other serial killers, it was obvious that Wuornos was a product of a very dysfunctional and abusive childhood, which has had an impact on her mental state and the way in which her brain developed. Whether or not she committed those horrible acts in self-defense or not is not something anyone can know since her testimonies were all over the place and she did plead guilty to having committed the murders; however, people who have interviewed her for documentaries and books have attested to the fact that she believed she acted in self-defense.
Aileen Wuornos is probably one of the biggest female serial killers that have fascinated the American media the most, with numerous books and movies inspired by her stories.
