7. From North Tarrytown to Sleepy Hollow

Among the US cities that changed their names, Sleepy Hollow stands out in the top ten. Initially known as North Tarrytown, it changed its name in 1966 because the residents were inspired by the old tale of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.

Everything started when General Motors closed the Hudson River plant, and a lot of people remained unemployed as a consequence. Since the situation was pitiful and more and more people wanted to leave the place, the city turned into a “hollow” one. Locals initially wanted to change the name of their city to attract more visitors. At least this could bring in more money to improve the economy of the city.
